Wayne Gunther

October 12, 1933 — September 15, 2016

Wayne LeRoy Gunther, 82, of Gothenburg, NE, died September 15, 2016 at Golden Living Center in Cozad.

He was born October 12, 1933 in Benkelman, NE, to Carl and Delna (Bradley) Gunther.

Wayne graduated from Benkelman High School and then enlisted in the United States Navy.  He served his country on the USS Brush in the Pacific and China Sea from 1954-1961 and was honorarily discharged.

Wayne worked different jobs in Benkelman and Wray, CO, traveling home on the weekends to visit his parents and his horse Jewels that they kept on the farm for him.  Wayne later took a job with the City of Gothenburg until his retirement.   Wayne married Sharon Eurich on December 17, 1982.

Wayne was a lifetime member of and a past Commander of Gothenburg's American Legion. Wayne and Sharon were actively involved in the Flag Memorial at Lake Helen in Gothenburg. Wayne and Sharon both shared a love for bowling and spent many years bowling in local leagues, the State Husker games, and National Tournaments.  Wayne and Sharon were avid Husker fans.  Wayne was the first to introduce the love of fishing to grandson Zachary.


Wayne is survived by his older brother Vernon of Princeton TX and Vernon's seven children.  Sharon's children Danny (Mary) Tompkins of Scottsbluff, NE., Shelley Tetley, North Platte, NE; five Grandchildren and six Great-Granchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Sharon, grandson Zachary Tompkins and Great grandson Barrett Love.

Graveside Services will be held at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Wednesday September 21, 2016 at 1:30 pm with  Pastor Joel Plisek officiating.

Both Wayne and Sharon will be laid to rest together at Fort McPherson National Cemetery and the family asks for casual attire.

Memorials may be given to the Gothenburg American Legion to help maintain the Flags at Lake Helen.
