He was born September 1, 1922 to Ed and Nora (Greenwaldt) Karges at Sergeant, Minnesota.
He graduated from the Lake City High School, in Lake City, Iowa in 1940. He then attended and graduated from Concordia College, St Paul, Minnesota in 1942. He then attended Concordia Seminary, Springfield, Illinois, graduating in 1946. On June 15, 1946 he was married to Irma Podshadley at Springfield, IL. Three children were born to this marriage, Sheryl, Noreen and Teresa.
At this time he worked with two Lutheran Churches in South Dakota. He also served as Lutheran Youth Secretary for the State of South Dakota. In 1962 he returned for further study at Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, Nebraska. From there he entered the University of Nebraska Graduate School in the Dept of Educational Psychology.
In 1965 he worked as a Counselor in the Boys Job Corps Center, U. S. Dept of Agriculture at Isabella, Minnesota. From 1966 to 1970 he became Manager of Educational and Vocational training for youth for the Burroughs Corporation. In this capacity he worked with youth in Omaha, NE, Detroit, Michigan, Westlake, California, and Guadalajara, Mexico. In 1971 and 1972 he worked for the Washington Training Corporation, Washington, D.C. in the training of youth who were in need of help.
On September 1, 1973 he married Mary L. (Ryan) Lantz of Lexington, NE.
From 1973 to 1987 he worked for the State of Nebraska, Dept. of Social Services. In this capacity he worked mainly with the County Offices in Western Nebraska and also served as Regional Director in the same area.
He was an active member of the American Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and tinkering in his garage.
Survivors include: Four daughters, Sheryl (Len) Higgins, Brownsville, OR., Noreen (Mike) Sullivan, Morgan Hill, CA, Teresa (Don) Demers, Aptos, CA , Monica (Richard) Schodorf of Wichita, KS; One son Jerry John (Joyce) Karges of Cozad. One sister Viola (Ray) Ihrke of Brownsdale, Minnesota. 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and his special cat Ralph.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Mary in 2005.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 7, at 11:00 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg NE with Pastor Matthew Groenke officiating. Burial will be in the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday, August 6 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.
Memorials may be directed to the Central Plains Hospice & the American Cancer Society.
