Wanda Block

Wanda Ruth Block, age 84 of Gothenburg passed away Sunday December 23, 2007 in Gothenburg.


Ruth was born February 28, 1923 in Kearney, Nebraska to Joseph and Maude (Moore) Fleharty the youngest of thirteen children. Ruth grew up in the Cozad area and attended school through the ninth grade at district 85.


Ruth married Milton Harold Block on April 3, 1945 in Gothenburg, Nebraska. The couple lived briefly in Tyler, Texas and returned to Gothenburg 1946 to raise a family.


Ruth was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg where she was a Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, and chairwoman of the ALCW. She also was a Brownie Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, Local Ground Observer Corps Supervisor, and the local and district chaplain and president of the Veterans Auxiliary. Ruth was a freelance artist who enjoyed painting downtown windows at the holidays and designing and accessorizing many festival floats. She also enjoyed making ceramics and pottery.


Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, and twelve siblings.


Ruth is survived by her husband Milton Block of Gothenburg, NE. One son Dean and wife Peg and their children Heather, Adam, and Joshua all of Omaha, NE. Also surviving Ruth are numerous nieces and nephews who she request to be honorary pallbearers.


Memorial service will be held Friday, December 28, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg, Nebraska with Lonna Grabenstien PMA officiating. Private family inurnment will follow at Ft. McPherson at a latter date.


Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church Women and to be designated for the Oaks Indian Mission in Oklahoma.
