Vernice Shaffer died June 1, 2017 at Senior Living Choices in Curtis, NE. She was 92.
Vernice was born July 15, 1924 in Maxwell, NE, to Charles E. "Jake" Jacobs and LaVera Tridle Jacobs. She attended Maxwell schools and graduated from Maxwell High School in 1942. On April 15, 1943, she and Opal L. Shaffer were married in Guide Rock, NE. As an Army wife she lived in California and Texas. After Opal's Army service they lived in Lincoln, NE; Guide Rock, Superior, and settled in Curtis, where she lived for over 50 years. A daughter and son were born to this union.
Vernice worked at Curtis State Bank for 22 years and was fortunate to know many of Curtis's citizens. She was involved in many community affairs including PEO, United Methodist Women, Curtis Theatre Board, Easter Pageant both as a character and singing in the choir, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Park Avenue Investment Club, and she sang in the church choir. She loved playing golf and cards.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Melvin Jacobs; her daughter-in-law, Laura Shaffer; and many other family members.
Vernice is survived by her son, Terry Shaffer, of Boise, Idaho; her daughter, Gloria (Mike) McGooden of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and many friends.
Graveside services and burial will take place at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM.
