Ruby Kahler

July 5, 1917 — July 26, 2009

Ruby (Folkers) Kahler was born July 5th 1917, near Angora Nebraska to Jaye and Mollie (Grove) Folkers the oldest of six children, and departed this life on July 26, 2009 at the age of 92. She spent her early years in Morrill County except for about three years that the family lived in Guernsey, Wyoming. They returned to Morrill County 1926. Her dad was a section foreman for the railroad and during the depression the railroad laid off section foremen so they were forced to move to keep a job. They moved to Bayard for a year and a half, then in order to have a year round job they moved to Bridgeport. Ruby graduated from Bridgeport high school in 1935.

She married Dan Kahler on May 2, 1937 at Bridgeport. To this union four children were born Loretta Jo Ann, Janice Eileen, David Warren and Barbara Ann. They lived southwest of Maywood until 1972 when they retired from the farm and moved into Maywood. In 1960 Ruby started to college and earned a teaching certificate and started teaching. She taught for nineteen years at schools in Frontier, Lincoln and Red Willow Counties. By going to night school and summer school she graduated from Kearney State College in 1971. She was appointed County Superintendent of Schools in 1980 and held that position until the offices were discontinued in 2000. She was in charge of the school display at the county fair for over twenty five years.

Ruby worked at Sunset Haven for over ten years as a nurse. She also worked at Senior Living Choices as a nurse. She felt like she had to be busy. She enjoyed her flowers and she did a lot of crocheting. Quite a few people have inherited her Christmas items. She made a quilt or an afghan for her grandkids graduation.

She has been a member of the Maywood Christian Church since November 1989. She was elected secretary treasurer in 1990 and served in that capacity for many years. She belonged to the Frontier County Historical Society and served as secretary. She was a member of the Stockville Friendship Club and the Pinochle Card Club and Sixties Club she was also a member of the Maywood Country Gardeners garden club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her son Warren and a grandson Wendell Greg Peters, a great grandson Gunner Joe Simpson, her parents, and both her sisters Katherine Connelly of Spokane, WA; and Violet Fulton of Gering, NE; three brothers Lyle Folkers of Aberdeen, WA; Truman Folkers of' Rapid City, SD; and Jaye Folkers of Los Vegas, NV and all her husband's family.

She is survived by her daughters, Loretta Dewey of Kearney, Janice (Wendell) Peters of McCook, Barbara (Rodney) Vrbka of Tecumseh and ten grandchildren and eight Great Grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and we hope a few friends.
