Robert Anthony Kelly, 79, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died May 30, 2014 at Bryan LGH Hospital in Lincoln, NE.

Robert (Bob) Kelly was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 12, 1934. As a youth he enjoyed playing many sports, especially football, basketball, and ice hockey. During the Korean War, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. After serving in the military, he moved back to Chicago and married Margaret Brzoska. To this union, four children were born: Mary Kay, Jayne, Gregg, and Michael. In the 1980's, after working as a proofreader and copy editor for R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company for over 25 years, Bob moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he met Nanette Bates. Bob and Nanette were married at the First United Methodist Church in Gothenburg, Nebraska on August 5, 1989. After a honeymoon in Europe, they moved to San Diego where their daughter, Karina, was born. In 1991, they moved to Guam where they lived for 5 years. They moved to Gothenburg, Nebraska in 1996 where Bob resided until his death. Bob was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Bob and his wife enjoyed traveling, golfing, and playing pool together.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Paul; his son, Gregg; his brother, Henry; his sister, Evelyn; and his brother-in-law, Charlie.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Nanette Bates of Gothenburg, NE; his daughters: Mary Kay (Frank) Grimaldi of Naples, FL; Jayne(Joe) McCauley of Pawleys Island, SC; and Karina Kelly of Omaha, NE; his son, Mike (Denise) Kelly of St. Louis, MO; three grandchildren: Robert (Justine) McCauley of Huntington, NY; and Brendan and Nicole Kelly of St. Louis, MO; and one great-grandson, James McCauley, his sister, Therese Coan of Three Oaks, MI; mother-in-law Arlene Bates of Gothenburg; brothers-in-law, Bill (Jill) Bates of Neligh, NE and Chauncey (Rosie) Bates of Gothenburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Register Book Signing will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Tuesday, June 03, 2014 9:00 am - 8:00 pm with the family present from 5-8.

Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, June 4, 2014 at 10:30 am with Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating.

Interment will follow in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Nebraska.

Memorials may be given to the North Platte VFW and Eagles Club.
