Pauline Wells

Pauline Wells, 91, of Hays, Kansas, formerly of Gothenburg, NE, died on January 24, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center Nursing Home in Hays, Kansas. She was born on June 26, 1915 at Lincoln, NE to Philip John and Rosina Marie (Schmidt) Kufeldt. She was the first child of that family to be born in the United States. Seven older children were born in Russia. The family moved to Scottsbluff, NE and then to Lexington, NE.

On February 17, 1935 she married William Paul "Bill" Wells. They lived in Lexington and Cozad. In the spring of 1945 they moved to Gothenburg. They farmed in all of these areas. In 1978 Bill and Pauline moved into Gothenburg, where Pauline enjoyed working at Schriver's market until that store closed.

Pauline was very active as a volunteer for the Gothenburg Senior Center and was an active blood donor. She was a member of the bridge club and loved quilting for church projects. She enjoyed bowling, and was on two teams, one of which all were over 80 years of age.

Survivors include: One son: William Allen Wells of Mesquite, NV; one daughter: Betty (Jerry) Stark of Hays, KS; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Three sisters: Amelia (Walter Howard) Nicks of Denver, CO; Lydia (Dean Hee and Harold) Hettinger of Sterling, CO; and Lea (Charlie) Hayes of Central City, NE. Several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband Bill, seven brothers: George, (Anna Rose); Alex (Mary); Soloman (Leona); Willie (Betty); Philip (Daphne); Carl and David. Two sisters; Rose Minch (Henry) and Dorothy.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 29, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church, Gothenburg, NE, with Pastor Matthew Groenke and Lonna Grabenstein, Parish Ministry Associate, officiating.

Burial is in the Gothenburg Cemetery, Gothenburg, NE.

Visitation is Sunday, January 28, at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m.
