Marvin O. "Bud" Schaffert, 92, of Ogallala, Nebraska, died March 15, 2013 at Ogallala Hospital in Ogallala, NE after a battle with cancer.
Bud was born February 19, 1921 in Hayes County, Nebraska to Michael and Elizabeth Miller Schaffert. He spent his youth on the family farm in Hayes County along with his 13 brothers and sisters. 18 children were born into the family however several died at birth or shortly after birth. he attended grade school in Valley, Nebraska and since he was the youngest in the family he was needed on the farm.
On April 7, 1943 he married Florence Russell at the court house in North Platte. They lived on the Schaffert family farm in Hayes County and farmed for 9 years before moving to Curtis, Nebraska in 1952 where Bud did carpenter work and plumbing. He moved his family to Sidney, Nebraska around 1954 where Bud worked for the railroad a short time and then the ordnance plant. Around 1956 he was looking for better work to support his family, and he packed everything into a trailer pulled by their car and they traveled to Renton Highlands, Washington and later bought a house in Mount Lake Terrace. While living in Seattle, Washington area he worked as an Expeditor for Boeing Aircraft.
Around 1958 he missed his home in the Midwest and moved his family to Berthoud, Colorado where he worked for a farmer in the summer and later in the fall, moved to Loveland, Colorado where he worked for Tri County Gas & Electric. It was around this time that Ward Bullock and Rick Fritsche called Bud and offered him a job at Bullock Hardware in Maywood, Nebraska. He would do all types of work there including, selling, installing and repairing appliances, lawn mowers, erecting gain bins, plumbing and electrical work. He worked for Bullock Hardware for many years, made many friends and had a reputation for doing excellent honest work.
In 1966 Bud and Harry his son started up their own business Hi-Line Plumbing and Electric in Maywood. After his son was hired by the US Postal Service, Bud operated the business alone for many years. In 1983 he sold his business and worked for the new owner until he was 72 years old. In 1996 Bud and Florence moved to Ogallala, NE to be closer to their daughter Elaine. Bud was a member of the IOOF Lodge for over 50 years and member of the Methodist Church. Being an innovator, if Bud couldn't buy a tool he would make one for the job. In his retirement his loved to create things out of wood and spare parts and could fix almost anything. He also loved working in his garden.
Survivors' include his wife, Florence, son - Harry (Wilma) Schaffert of Alliance, NE; two daughters - Elaine (Don) Eggert of Lemoyne, Charlotte Jones of Ogallala; six grandchildren - Tammy (Stacy) Mittlestaedt, Mike (Patty) Eggert, James (Latrice) Eggert, Tyson (Michelle) Schaffert, Shawn Schaffert and Scott Tirrill, 6 great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Marvin was preceded in death by his father, Michael Schaffert, mother, Elizabeth Schaffert and 18 brothers and sisters.
Memorial services will be held at Maywood Methodist Church, Monday, March 25, 2013 at 2:30 pm with Pastor Tammy Aubushon officiating.
Inurnment will follow in the Maywood Cemetery, Maywood, Nebraska.
