Marian Fattig

December 18, 1929 — January 15, 2013

Marian S. Fattig, 83, of Brady, Nebraska, passed away January 15, 2013 at Golden Living Center in Cozad.

Marian was born December 18, 1929, in Brady to Edwin and Edith Brown Hoaglund. She attended Brady High School and earned an Associates Degree at Mid-Plains Community College.

Marian married her husband of 63 years, Dale Forrest Fattig, on June 1, 1947, at the Brady Methodist Church. They spent the early years of their marriage homesteading on Mirage Flats in Sheridan County. After their return in 1951, Marian worked for a time as a switchboard operator for the telephone company in Brady.

Marian and Dale moved to the farm that would become their home for the rest of their lives in 1957. After the family aquaculture business, Fattig Fish, was founded that same year, Marian became instrumental in the operation’s continued success. While she devoted most of her time to raising her six children, Marian cared for a plethora of other flora and fauna, including Simmental and Gelbvieh cattle, Schnauzers, songbirds, and a diverse collection of beautiful flowers and trees.

Equally as diverse were Marian’s interests. Marian participated in many political and civic activities in Lincoln County; she often campaigned for candidates and helped administer the national census. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering, painting watercolors, solving crosswords, and reading novels and poetry.

Children were at the center of her heart, and after her own children left home, Marian studied Child Development at University of Nebraska-Kearney, and often babysat. She was devoted to her many grandchildren, and the arrival of her great-grandchildren brought a renewed sense of joy into her life.

Survivors include her three sons, Roger (Melanie) Fattig and Mark Fattig, all of North Platte, and Bruce (Ann) Fattig, of Kearney; three daughters, Susan (John Grasser), of Chevy Chase, Md., Sharon (Cliff) Johnson, of Wellingborough, England, and Carol (Barry) Rich, of Brady; 15 grandchildren, Elissa, Crystal, Ethan, Brandon, Lauren, Sarah, Ted, Katherine, Eric, John Pierce "JP," Elisabeth, Cody, Kirsten, Caelea and Lilian; 12 great-grandchildren, Isaac, Jonah, Kyrie, Carly, Chloe, Dale, Madden, Adelyn, Steven, Beatrix, Emmett, and Rylan; and other family.

Marian was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Richard ‘Eugene’ Hoaglund and Vernon ‘Shorty’ Hoaglund.

Closed Casket Visitation will be Friday, January 18, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel.

Funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM, Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, 620 Tenth St., Gothenburg, Nebraska, with Rev. Janie Freeman officiating.
