Margaret Haswell-Jersin

December 22, 1922 — January 10, 2019

Margaret Ione Haswell-Jersin, 96, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died  January 10, 2019 at Callaway Good Life Center with her granddaughter Crystal and her family by her side.

She was born December 22, 1922 on the family farm north of Callaway, NE, daughter of Eugene, Sr and MeLinda (Spooner) Whipple.

Margaret grew up in the Sandhills 20 miles north of Arnold.  She attended rural grade school north of Arnold until 7th grade, then she transferred to Anselmo for a couple years. She worked in various restaurants and cafes in Callaway, Arnold, North Platte, Colorado Springs, Grand Island, and Gothenburg. She also worked as a motel manager for many years.  She married James R. Haswell on April 1, 1941 at Broken Bow.  They had eight children - James D., Ivan E., Allen B., Linda L., Peggy S., Leslie R., Annettie M., and Laurie K.  Later she married Alvin L Jersin Sr.

Margaret moved back to Gothenburg in 1995.  She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Order of Eagles at North Platte.   She attended the American Lutheran Church.  When her health began to fail, she moved to Callaway.

She is survived by her children  Allen Haswell, Peggy (Ricky) Mathes, Annettie Haswell, Laurie (Vince) Sharkey; 27 grandchildren, 19 great grand children, seven great great grandchildren; daughter-in-law Judy Haswell.  Along with many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; children Linda Haswell, James Haswell, Ivan Eugene Haswell, Tracy Haswell and Leslie "Bud" Haswell; two brothers, Karl Whipple, Eugene Whipple; sister, Bethel June Willis; daughter-in-law Dorian Haswell and both of her husbands.

Memorial Services will be held at American Lutheran Church, January 14, 2019 at 2:30 pm with Pastor Jon Mapa officiating.

Memorials may be given to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515.
