Marjorie Sue Turnquist, 88, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died July 29, 2012 in Grand Island, NE.
Sue was born August 26, 1923 in Omaha, NE the seventh of 10 children to Dr. Homer David and Lola Cecile (Beard) Lurvey in Omaha, NE. She graduated from Hay Springs, NE high school and attended Chadron State College where she received her teaching certificate. She also received an accounting certificate from Omaha University. Sue lived for a short time in Arizona, where she worked as an accountant. She taught school at District 24, Valley, NE where she met Max Turnquist. She taught at Ashland Park, South Omaha, NE, the largest rural school in the world. Sue married Max Turnquist in 1958 at Gothenburg. To this union, two children were born - Mitzi and Greg. Sue was very active in her community and was a civic minded wife and mother. She served on the Red Cross Bloodmobile, was a Boy Scout & Girl Scout Leader, 4-H Leader, Job's Daughters, NCIP, volunteer Teacher's Aide, Heart Fund, President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Election Board, Gothenburg Community Playhouse, Girls State Selection Committee and Convention Counselor, Chairperson for Meals on Wheels, and MOPS. She enjoyed word puzzles, crafts, knitting crocheting, rubber stamping and making cards.
Survivors include daughter - Mitzi (Barrett) Stinson of Grand Island, NE; son - Gregory (Holly) Turnquist of Rochester Hills, MI; two grandsons -Gaven Turnquist, Kelton Turnquist; brother - Herbert (Imogene) Lurvey of Omaha, NE; sister - Lillian Thieman both of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law - Ellen Dennis of Arnold, NE; brother-in-law - Don (Kathy) Turnquist of Hutchinson, KS; along with nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Wendell Max Turnquist on April 1, 2012; her parents, two sisters - Helen Andrews, Anne Waldeck; three brothers - John, Bill and Lloyd Lurvey.
Book Signing will be held at Thursday, August 16, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; .
Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church, Friday, August 17, 2012 at 10:30 am with Pastor Bill Ivey officiating.
Cremation was chosen. She will be inurned with her husband in Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, NE.
