Laura Block, 92, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died September 13, 2018 at Stone Hearth Estates in Gothenburg, NE.
Laura Duerschner Block was born May 3, 1926 to Erwin and Bertha Duerschner in Sacramento, CA. He father was a Lutheran minister. Laura had two sisters and one brother. The family traveled to Nebraska in the early 30's. They lived in several towns in Nebraska and eventually moved to Gothenburg when Laura was a junior in high school. Her father was the minister of St John's Lutheran Church. While living in Gothenburg, Laura met Gene Block and they were married in 1947. Gene and Laura moved to Lincoln where Gene completed his degree at the University of Nebraska. Laura worked as the secretary to the Chancellor at the University. After Gene graduated, they lived in several different states and ended up moving back to Gothenburg in 1959 to farm. Laura was the organist at the Lutheran Church for many years. Gene and Laura both sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and were active in the community. Laura belonged to several bridge clubs and enjoyed playing cards. Laura always liked being outside working in her garden and yard. She made lots of counted-cross stitch pictures, and enjoyed trying new casserole recipes with her family. In later years she had the opportunity to travel with friends, seeing many parts of the United States and Canada.
Laura is preceded in death by her husband Gene Block, granddaughter Susan Elizabeth Jobman, one sister Rose (Ken) gohl, brother Arthur (Charlotte) Duerschner, and brother-in-law Floyd Block.
She is survived by by her sister Vera Lundahl, daughters Cathy (Dick) Binfield of Aurora, Nebraska, Nancy (Terry) Jobman of Gothenburg, and John (Mary Lou) Block of Gothenburg. She is also survived by grandchildren Matt Binfield of Seoul, Korea, Mark (Bess) Binfield of Palmyra, Nebraska, Andy (Becky) Jobman and David (Jana) Jobman of Gothenburg, Erin Jobman of Norton, Kansas, Cobus (Amara) Block of Lincoln, Nebraska, Kirsten (Trevor) Anderson of South Bend, Indiana, and Chris Block of Gothenburg, and two great grandchildren Samuel Binfield and Louella Block.
Register Book Signing will be held from 3:00-5:00 pm, Sunday, September 16, 2018 at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, NE with the family present.
Services will be held at American Lutheran Church, September 17, 2018 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Jon Mapa officiating.
Interment will take place in the American Lutheran Cemetery, Gothenburg, NE.
Memorials may be given to the American Lutheran Church Foundation, 1512 Avenue G, Gothenburg, NE 69138, or the Gothenburg Public Library, 1104 Lake Ave, Gothenburg, NE 69138. .
