Larry Clark Gill, 76, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska, surrounded by his family, after an accidental injury. Larry was born in Cozad, Nebraska to Ted Gill and Alice Rena (Thayer) Gill on May 31, 1940. He married Janice Williams on August 21, 1966. He attended Cozad High School and graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in 1969 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. He moved to Gothenburg that same year where he began working at the “96” Ranch owned by his father-in-law Robert M. Williams. He began managing the ranch upon Williams’ passing in 1973 and maintained that position until his death.
He was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gothenburg and served as an Elder, Treasurer and member of the choir. He was deeply involved in his community, serving most recently on the board of the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital, and had served on the board of the Thirty Mile Canal and Six Mile Ditch, the local Board of Education, and on the Board of Directors of the Gothenburg State Bank.
All who worked with him appreciated his fierce dedication and steadfastness, and all who knew him valued his kindness, generosity, humor and genuine interest in those around him.
He devoted his life to his faith, family, friends and community, and his proudest roles were as husband, father, and grandfather. Nothing made him happier than being with his grandchildren, taking them to Cornhusker football games, working with them at the ranch, and dutifully attending all their various activities. He was a fixture at Saturday morning breakfast with his “girls.”
He was preceded in death by his parents Ted Gill and Alice Rena (Thayer) Gill, mother-in-law Janice (Lacey) (Williams) Buddenburg and father-in-law Robert Williams, brothers-in-law Dean Baalhorn and Robert Williams Jr., and grandson Drew Michael Kennicutt.
He is survived by his wife Janice, son Ben Gill of Oakland, California, daughter Claudine (Jamey) of Gothenburg, daughter Sally (Jeffrey) Guthmiller of Omaha, five grandchildren, Jocelyn, Natalie and Marley Kennicutt and Callan and Cella Guthmiller, sister Lois (Gill) Baalhorn of Gothenburg, brother-in-law Matt (Susan) Williams of Gothenburg, aunt Betty Thayer of Manhattan Beach, California, as well as several nieces and nephews.
