H. Leo Hanes, 93, of Curtis, passed away on June 26, 2009 at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, NE.
He was born on September 19, 1915 to Harvey Ellsworth and Fern (Blake) Hanes at Freedom, NE. He grew up eight miles south of Stockville attending school at Champion Dist. # 33. He graduated from Havana High School in 1932. Leo was drafted into the 45th Infantry Division of Army National Guard in October 1941. He fought in Sicilian, Salerno and Anzio Beach heads during WWII.
Following the war Leo returned to Frontier County were he went back to farming.
On February 11, 1948 he married Ruby Wilson at McCook, NE. To this union four children were born; Beverly, Linda, Donna and Marvin.
Leo lived in Frontier Co. his entire life and farmed South of Moorefield until he and Ruby moved to Curtis in 1995.
Leo was a member of the Odd fellows and the American Legion. He coached women's fast pitch softball for many years; he loved to play cards, dance, coyote hunt and fish. Leo enjoyed playing with his grandkids and great grandkids.
Harvey is survived by his daughters- Beverly Lenz (Jim Johnson) of Dallas, TX, Linda (Mel) Armstrong of Elm Creek, NE, Donna (Ray) Bunnell of Alma, NE; son- Marvin (Carol) Hanes of Moorefield, NE; brothers - Bob (Joyce) Hanes of LaSalle, CO; Dean (Kay) Hanes of Loveland, CO; sister - Carol (Charley) Arent of Red Feather Lake, CO; 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, Larry Lenz of Curtis, NE; sisters-in-law - Zella Mae Sanders of Gothenburg, NE and Geraldine Wilson of Curtis, NE; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife- Ruby E Hanes; sisters- Mamie Crawford, Viva Wollam; brothers- Francis Hanes, Charles Hanes and great-granddaughter Abby Reiser.
