Elgie was born at White, Nebraska in Hayes County, on March 28, 1926 to Adolph and Ella (Klug) Werkmeister. He attended school at Valley.
On September 22, 1948 he married Betty Robertson in North Platte, Nebraska. To this union two children were born Elwyn and Sherri.
In 1951 Elgie joined the United States Army to serve his country during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
Elgie was a member of the VFW, American Rifle Association, AMVETS Post 30 of Maywood, and served on the FFA Board. Elgie was baptized as a child in the Lutheran Faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, restoring old cars and farming and ranching. Elgie loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Elgie was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Max, and Raymond, sister-in-law Jean, brother-in-law Chet Bennett.
Elgie is survived by his wife Betty of Maywood, NE. His children Sherri Werkmeister and Elwyn Werkmeister of Maywood, NE. Grandchildren Emily and son Jaxson Werkmeister of Maywood, NE, Katie Werkmeister of Lincoln, NE, and Nickolas Werkmeister of Lincoln, NE. Three brothers Leo Werkmeister, of Maywood, NE, Earnest and wife Pat Werkmeister of Longmont, CO, and Melvin and wife Lucille Werkmeister of Maywood, NE. Three sisters Lois Bennett of Niwot, CO, Arlene Werkmeister of Longmont, CO, and Darlene Werkmeister of Maywood, NE. Two sister-in-law's Donna Werkmeister of Maywood, NE, Roberta Werkmeister, of Palisade, NE.
Graveside services will be held Friday, July 20, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Maywood, Cemetery in Maywood, Nebraska with Pastor Dale Heimer officiating.
Visitation will be held Thursday July 19, 2007 from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel in Curtis, Nebraska.
Memorials are suggested to the Donor's Choice.
Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Chapel of Curtis is in charge of all arrangements.
