Frances Eleanor Schick Hammond, age 84, of Curtis passed away July 26, 2007 at the Senior Living Choices in Curtis.
Eleanor was born September 7, 1922, in Lincoln County, north of Curtis to George G. and Edna Ellen Dempcy Schick. Her mother, Edna died when she was a five weeks old. She then lived with her Aunt Ethel and Uncle Raliegh Kempton and Cousins Emily and Lester for five years. After George married Gertrude Gorley Holmes, June 15, 1927, Eleanor returned to the farm north of Curtis where she grew up. She graduated from Nebraska School of Agriculture in 1940 with a teaching certificate. Eleanor then taught school at district 75 north of Curtis for two years.
On October 22, 1941, she married Richard Elbert Hammond in Phillipsburg, Kansas. They farmed and ranched most of their lives in the Curtis area.
Eleanor was a member of the Pleasant Home Methodist Church and then the Curtis United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, played the piano, and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Easter Pageant Choir from its beginning until recent years. She also gave piano lessons to many children.
Eleanor is survived by her two daughters, Lenore (Tyre) Nelson of Hayes Center, NE, and Elaine (Larry) Elson of Curtis, NE; a son Rick (Heidi) Hammond of Clarks, NE; nine grandchildren, Trey (Stephanie) Nelson of Chesapeake, VA, Ken (Jamie) Nelson of McCook, NE, Clay (Alicia) Elson of Gretna, NE, Christiana (David) Dodson of Maywood, NE, Chad Elson of McCook, NE, Jesse, Meghan, Erin, and Sarah Hammond of Clarks, NE, and fifteen great-grandchildren Hollis, Holden, Sean, Lydia, Isabel, Josh, Joe, Paige, Trey, Jenna, Beka, Dex, Dotti, Darbe, and Davi, sisters-n-law Shirley Schick of Westminster, CO, and Nell Hammond of Curtis, NE, brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Dee Farrar of Hemingford, NE and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, three brothers Glen and wife Irene, Wayne, and Loren, sister-in-law Barbara Farrar, brother-in-law Gail Hammond, and a special cousin Emily Freburg who Eleanor considered a sister.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 30, 2007, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Curtis, Nebraska.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at the Curtis United Methodist Church, Curtis, Nebraska, with Pastor Ray Norris officiating.
Burial will take place one hour prior to the memorial service in the Curtis Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Curtis United Methodist Church or the Donor's Choice.
