Don W. Schick, 77, of Curtis, Nebraska, died March 10, 2014 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, NE.
Don William Schick was born February 20, 1937 in North Platte, NE, son of Gerald W. and Esther (Crawford) Schick. Don grew up on a farm about 5 miles north of Curtis on Fox Creek. He lived in the Curtis area his entire life, with deep roots dating back to his great grandparents who homesteaded 12 miles north of Curtis in 1879. Don attended country school a few years and then elementary school in Curtis. He went to the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis where he acquire his love for all sports. After graduating in 1955, he went on to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy. He was a member of the Farm House Fraternity and several honorary Fraternity's while there.
On October 25, 1959 he married D. Kathryn Charron of Central City, NE who also attended the University in Lincoln. They made their home on the old Freeman place, 7 miles north of Curtis, where they farmed and raised reputation Hereford and Angus cattle. They added surrounding land as it became available and Don worked on many conservation practices to leave the land better than when he found it. The couple adopted two children as infants - Debra Kay born March 18, 1966 and Darryl William born March 16, 1968.
Don was a true Nebraskan with a hard work ethic, honesty and integrity. His word was always as good as any written contract. He was an avid Husker fan and followed the football, volleyball and basketball teams closely. A Husker game was one of the few things he would stop work for. He also loved to fish and hunt but rarely took the time to do so.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 54 years, Kathy Schick of Curtis, daughter Debra Thayer and husband Michael of Central City, son Darryl Schick of Curtis, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Esther Schick and his sister Judith.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Curtis, Nebraska; Thursday, March 13, 2014 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm. with the family present from 4-5.
Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Friday, March 14, 2014 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Bonnie Forney officiating.
Interment will follow in the Curtis Cemetery, Curtis, Nebraska.
Memorials may be given to the Curtis or Maywood Fire & Rescue.
