Delvin Richard Seil, 81, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died May 7, 2017 in Cozad, NE.
Delvin was born December 8, 1935, on the family farm near Churdan, IA, son of Henry and Emma (Kanning) Seil. He had an older brother Duane and a cousin Myra who was like a sister to him. Delvin was named after a banker and was baptized and confirmed in the Christ Lutheran Church northeast of Churdan. He had many stories and happy memories of his childhood. He loved living on the farm and all of it various activities. It was a simple life with many life lessons. His nickname "Olie" was given to him from a classmate and life long friend David Lohr. His favorite subject was history. He loved driving his dads 1948 Ford pickup during his high school years. He graduated from Churdan with the class of 1953.
In 1954 at the age of 18 he enlisted in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, 7th Division 48th field artillery. He served his country proudly. Delvin married Marlene Carlson on June 9, 1957; to this union three children were born- Lori Lynn, Brian Richard and Brent Allen. He continued to farm in the Farnhamville area until moving to Sharpsburg, IA in 1972. He continued to farm, living in several places before settling in Arizona. He then moved to Gothenburg, NE where he lived for over 40 years. He worked for Sargent Irrigation and CO-OP; along with several area farmers. If you had asked him what his major was and how he chose it, his answer would have been "Hard Knocks Degree", not by choice but I have done so many different jobs it gives me a very rounded resume.
He had at least two special dogs that were faithful companions Sparky and Skippy. He loved reading, traveling and collecting railroad items. His love for his flowers and gardening earned him "Yard of the Week"! He never knew a stranger and would strike up an conversation or give advice over a cup of coffee. He loved going to the Senior Center for conversation and a meal. Due to a decline in his health he moved to Cozad nursing home in March 2016.
Left to cherish his memory are Lori (Chad) Beemer, Irwin, IA; Brian and Thom Ender, Fremont, NE; Brent of McCook, NE; grandsons, Alan, Andy, Aric Beemer and two great grandkids, Emma and Kholt Beemer and a sister-in-law Judy. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Delvin is now free of pain, lost memories, and home with his Lord and Savior.
