Carol Sappingfield

Carol A. Sappingfield, 92, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, passed away Friday, June 3, 2022, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.

A memorial service will take place Wednesday, June 8, at 1 p.m. at Cornerstone Bible Church, 1721 Lake Ave., Gothenburg with Pastor Scott Newman officiating. Interment will follow at F. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Sappingfield was born at home on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1930, at Walthill, son of Berthal "Bert" and Iva (Peterson) Sappingfield. He grew up in the Walthill area and attended high school at Winnebago prior to working with his brother, Eldon, in South Sioux City.

On Jan. 14, 1951, he was united in marriage to Lauraine E. Johnson at Lyons. To this union, a daughter, Carol "Kim," and a son, Tracy "Flip" were born. His wife passed away in 1995. He later married Corinne (Fecht) Wallace on June 15, 1996, at Gothenburg.

Sappingfield served with the United States Army 45th Armored Reconnaissance Company during the Korean War from October of 1951 to July of 1953, where he once drove a special service jeep for USO performer Eddie Fisher while in Seoul.

Following his service, Sappingfield was a truck driver until attending Barber College at Sioux City, IA, graduating in 1956. After moving his family to Gothenburg in 1961, he began his own business, Sappingfield's Barber Shop, where he continued serving the area until 2005 when he retired at the age of 75.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting trips as well as woodworking and spending time with family.

Sappingfield participated as a Golden Gloves boxer and was a member of the Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department throughout the 1960's and '70s, a member of the American Lutheran Church, the American Legion and VFW as well as an active member of the Jaycees.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Bert and Iva Sappingfield; his first wife, Lauraine Sappingfield; four brothers—Don, Bert Jr., Eldon and Bill Sappingfield.

Survivors include: his wife, Corinne Sappingfield of Gothenburg; a daughter, Kim (Dave) Tobaben of Gothenburg; a son, Tracy "Flip" (Karen) Sappingfield of Gothenburg; sister, Elaine Pedersen of Sioux City, IA; two granddaughters—Andrea and Rachel Tobaben, both of Kearney; two grandsons—Joshua Tobaben of Omaha and Shane (Kendyl) Sappingfield of Kearney; great-grandson, Brenton Tobaben of Kearney; two great-granddaughters—Haedyn Tobaben of Kearney and Penelope Tobaben of Omaha; numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department, the Gideon's and Central Plains Hospice.
