Brian Cox

October 14, 1960 — December 3, 2024

Maywood, Nebraska

Brian Dale Cox, 64, of Maywood, Nebraska, passed away at his home on December 3, 2024. Born on October 14, 1960, in North Platte, Nebraska, to Richard (Dick) Cox and Connie (Schnase) Cox.

Brian spent his early years in Maywood and Orleans, Nebraska, before moving to Mesa, Arizona, where he attended high school. His family later returned to Nebraska, where he met the love of his life, Leanne (Chehey) Cox. They were united in marriage on April 10, 1982, at the Maywood United Methodist Church, and together, they raised two children, Michael and Terra.

Brian dedicated much of his working life to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, where he worked for 26 years and served as a supervisor at the time of his passing. Before that, he had worked for Burlington Northern in McCook, the Maywood Elevator and Frontier County in Maywood. Known for his strong work ethic and loyalty to his job, Brian was looking forward to his retirement, which was scheduled for January 3, 2025. He was excited to enjoy time at home, watching the snow fall from the comfort of his home rather than plowing it—a simple joy he had long anticipated.

An avid Nebraska Husker fan, Brian also had a deep and enduring love for his family. Grandpa found endless joy in teasing his grandkids, always with a mischievous grin, and he was known for being a bit ornery at times. He was also known to enjoy a good book whenever he had a quiet moment. In his earlier years, he loved hunting and golfing, hobbies that brought him great enjoyment. His role as a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather brought him much pride and happiness.

Brian is survived by his wife, Leanne (Chehey) Cox of Maywood; son, Michael Cox of Maywood; daughter, Terra (Cox) Peitz and husband Weston of Curtis; sister, Julie (Cox) Hazen and husband Monte of Maywood; brother, Steve and wife Candy Cox of North Platte; sister, Amy (Cox) Gardner and husband Bobby of Curtis; special aunt Mae Annette (Annie) Schnase; mother-in-law, Doris Chehey of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Greg Chehey and wife Toby of Cathedral City, CA; sister-in-law, Julie (Chehey) Shirley and husband Al of Lexington; sister-in-law, Jolene (Chehey) Dubas of Hastings and sister-in-law, Janice (Chehey) Hildebrandt of Lincoln. He was a proud grandfather to Blake and Kaydence Cox and fiancé Tony Braniff; Kaylee Cox; Cooper and Levi Tidyman; Kennedy, Mayzee, and Lakelyn Peitz; and a great-grandfather to Riggin Braniff and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard (Dick) Cox; his mother, Connie Moser and her husband, Lou; his father-in-law, Max Chehey; and his grandparents, Carl and Alma Schnase and Richard and Rita Cox.

A Celebration of Life and Retirement Party will be held on January 4, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Maywood Community Hall. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring Brian’s life and his upcoming retirement.

The family requests that any donations be made to a memorial fund in Brian’s name for designation by his family at a later date. Brian will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
