Barbara Garrett

Barbara J. Garrett, 77, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died January 3, 2018 in Gothenburg, NE.

She was born May 28, 1940 in Gering, NE, daughter of Alexander and Pauline (Zechman) Dietrich.  The Dietrich family would eventually move to Alliance, NE where Barbara attended and in 1958, graduated from Alliance High School.  She would go on attend Chadron State College for a year before marrying Larry Garrett on August 7, 1960 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance.

Barbara and Larry moved to Memphis, TN where Larry attended optometry school and Barbara worked at a Memphis bank as a personal bookkeeper for the bank president. In the spring of 1965 Larry graduated from optometry school and they moved to Gothenburg, where they established an optometric practice in September of 1965.

Through the years, Barbara had been active in many activities in and around the community.  In addition to working as Larry's office manager and maintaining his records, she was also involved in Jaycees, sang in the Community Christmas Cantata, and for many years, she sang in the North Platte Chapter of the Sweet Adeline's.  She was a member of the Red Hats and was very active in the Two-Ten extension club.  She very much enjoyed being involved in the Mary-Martha Circle and Trinity Lutheran Church.

Surviving are daughter, Lisa (Jon) Seimer of Gothenburg, NE,  grandchildren, Alex and Abby Meyer; three step grandchildren, two brothers Marvin and Willard (Karen) Dietrich' sister Lillian Barker-Hannon, along with several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by husband, Larry D. Garrett in 2016, her parents,  brother, Alex & Shirley Dietrich, brother, Kenneth Dietrich, sister Alma (Jack) Runge, sister-in-law Betty Dietrich, brother-in-laws Dennis (Julie) Garrett.

Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Friday, January 12, 2018, 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm. with her family present from 4-6.

Funeral Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11:00 am with Rev. Jeff Cottingham officiating.

Interment will follow in the Gothenburg Cemetery, Gothenburg, Nebraska.
