Alverda was born to Martin William and Molly (Friesenborg) Sommer on September 3, 1931 in Gothenburg, NE.
Alverda was baptized September 28, 1931, at St John's Lutheran Church and confirmed on September 15, 1946 also at St John's. Alverda attended and graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1950. During her younger years, she worked at Myers' Drugstore, followed by employment at W J O'Connors and Kampfe's Clothing Store.
On September 12, 1954 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Gothenburg, she was united in marriage with Donald W. Cook and to this union two daughters were born: Debra and Sandra. Alverda enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, sewing, reading, doing crafts, and watching Husker football and volleyball. During her lifetime, she was a Girl Scout Brownie's leader, and member of Tuesday Tickers Extension Club, Hilltop Birthday Club, American Lutheran Church, and American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her two daughters, Debra (David) Clark and Sandra (Lonnie) Warner, a granddaughter, Ashley (Rob) Micek and their daughter Ari of Grand Island, three grandsons, Jed Clark of Salem, Oregon, Adam Warner (Andrea Ostendorf) and daughter Paige Hoeke and Caleb (Stephanie) Warner and their children Dakota, Amos and Callen all of Gothenburg. She is also survived by one niece and four nephews.
Alverda was proceeded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister, Arlene Gifford, sister-in-law, Marion Eilers, brothers-in-law John Gifford and Richard Eilers and nephew Brian Eilers.
Visitation: 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm, June 22, 2023 Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, 620 Tenth St, Gothenburg, NE with the family present from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.
Funeral Services: 10:30 am, Friday, June 23, 2023, at the American Lutheran Church, 1512 Ave G, Gothenburg, NE, with Pastor Doug Hjelmstad Officiating, burial will follow in the Gothenburg Cemetery.
